About Robert

Robert W. Dowling recited verses of Keats to himself as he swam the circumference of Manhattan Island on September 5, 1915 in 13 hours and 45 minutes. He was the first man ever to perform this feat. A few years later, as a Navy officer during World War I, Dowling proposed that swimmers tow mines into enemy harbors. By all accounts, he liked a good challenge..

With naught but a high school education, Dowling went on to become a towering voice in New York City development and planning, heading the City Investment Company for three decades and inspiring colleges to rename themselves in his honor. Once, for lack of faith in government expediency, he funded the painting of a neighborhood subway kiosk out-of-pocket. He learned to fly a plane at age 50. Dowling, 6’1” and with 47-inch chest, was once described as looking ‘like a man perpetually reviewing a parade.’ He was 77 when he died in his home on August 28, 1973.
