Kathrin Raymond Benoit
Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado
I was born in 1978 in South-Western Germany in a town called Mannheim. I started swimming when I was about 12 or 13 at the local club and subsequently swam until I graduated high school. My preferred stroke was always freestyle and I swam anything between 50 and 800 freestyle. After high school I switched to triathlon and pursued the sport full-time for roughly five years. I competed in many Olympic distance triathlons and several Half-Ironman (e.g. Ironmaui 1998, Immenstadt Triathlon 1999) before focusing on Ironman races (e.g. Ironman Florida 200, Ironman Lanzarote 2002). My biggest successes in triathlon were winning the 2001 International Triathlon Union Long Distance World Championship for age 18-24 as well as my two finishes at the Ironman Hawaii 2001 and 2002. After retiring from the sport in 2003 I immigrated to the United States and pursued my education more seriously. I now call Colorado home and have recently graduated with a MasteríŽs in Psychology. I began to train again in a structured manner in 2007 with the goal of eventually swimming the English Channel. I competed in the Horsetooth 10k open water swim 2008 and 2009 with times of 2h 51min and 2h 39 min respectively (the training seems to be paying off â║). This season I also finished the Swim Around Key West in 5 hours 58 minutes while facing adverse currents on raceday. I currently train with Joe Bakel and Elizabeth Alberton who are to attempt the English channel next season. I have reserved a tide with pilot Mike Oram for the 2012 Dover season. At present we are training in local mountain lakes and I am learning to adapt to temperatures in the lower 50ies. Additionally, I train with a Colorado Masters Swim team. This fall IíŽd like to set a personal record in the postal 6000 and also swim some sprint races since this appears to be helping with stroke technique. I also have a 4 year-old son who just got his first pair of goggles. While IíŽve never been the fastest of swimmers I maintain a solid swimming shape and an even more solid heart-felt passion for our sport. My goal is to finish the Swim Around Manhattan Island as well as the Catalina and the English ChannelíKBut one thing at a time â║.
