Hometown: Sydney, Australia
Some would say that it was inevitable that I would take up marathon swimming. My father swam the English Channel 19 times from 1970 to 1980 and was "King of the Channel" from 1975 to 1980. Over the years I dabbled in distance swimming. In 1991 I was a member of the first all Australian Relay Team to swim the English Channel. In 1993 I was a member of the first relay team in history to successfully complete a 4-way channel crossing in a time of 43 hours and 7 minutes.
My marathon swimming career laid dormant until 2005, when I swam the 10km Bondi to Watsons Bay swim. In testing conditions and unprepared for what lay ahead, I finished 5th out of a field of 24 starters and only 13 finishers. In 2007 I finished the race in 3rd place and then swam back to Bondi to complete a 20km swim. A change in my professional life enabled me to take on the English Channel for the third time – this time as a solo swimmer. On 01 August 2007 I climbed upon a rock at high tide and in the dark of night at the base of Cap Gris Nez. Now my dream is to complete the Triple Crown of marathon swimming.
