About Dave

Four years ago, I had the honor of participating in the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. As that year's participants will remember, a thunderstorm passed over the swim in the afternoon, causing a one hour delay in the swim. As a result of this delay, I was unable to complete the swim. I was pulled out of the water less than one mile from the finish line!!! That year, I dedicated the swim to my dad, who was suffering from cancer. He has since passed away, but I promised him I would enter the race again, and FINISH this time. I am going to dedicate my race to his memory. The money I plan to raise for the race will go to SwimFree. My dad grew up in East Orange, NJ, and he was taught how to swim at the local YMCA. My dad taught me how to swim when I was a kid, and I know he would approve of this charity. I have made a small donation myself to SwimFree, and I plan to raise significant money for this cause. In the last two years, I was part of a bicycle team that raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In the past two years, we raised in excess of $200,000 for this cause. I consider myself to be someone who has been blessed with second chances. Three years ago, I competed in the Bicycle Race Across America (RAAM). While competing in the race, I shattered my hip and femur, and had to have reconstructive surgury on my leg. After extensive rehab, I was able to compete in RAAM again last year, and this time I made it all the way across the country!!! I promise the Acceptance Committee that I will be READY for the MMS this summer if I am lucky enough to get in. In addition to swimming, I enjoy cycling and running. I just competed in and finished the American Double Iron Man - an event held in Virginia each year. The event consists of a 5 mile swim, and 225 mile bike, and a 52 mile run. There were 27 participants, and I was one of 19 who completed the event. I am the proud father of three kids - Aubrey (21), Don (19), and Daniel (17). Happily married for 24 years. When I am not swimming, I am working or spending time with my family. I love swimming. I am now swimming five days a week - between 20 and 25 miles. I never swam on a team in high school or college, so every day of swimming is a great education for me. I love watching all the great swimmers in my Masters group. My heroes are my swim teachers and all the people I swim with every day.
