Hometown: Arlington, Tennessee
I look forward to competing in the 2011 MIMS. This will be my 4th open-water marathon swim. I completed the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim and the Catalina Channel in 2008, and successfully swam the English Channel on July 20, 2010.
I led the support team for my brother, Dr. Scott Richards, for his 2006 MIMS swim and his successful English Channel crossing on July 9, 2007. My involvement with these swims resulted in the restarting of my own swimming career at age 50 to focus on open-water events. I had some success as a distance swimmer in the 1970's, first in high school at Pine Crest in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and then in college at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Tennessee has been home for over 25 years due to career opportunities, so immediate access to open-water training locations can be difficult. Fortunately, my brother (and now coach) lives just north of San Diego, so I have become a frequent weekend visitor for training swims in the Pacific waters off of La Jolla.
A successful MIMS swim will allow me to join both of my crew members, my brother and Scott Coleman, in the select list of people completing the “Triple Crown” of open-water marathon swims.
