Tom Hecker is a 56-year-old who began swimming open water swims in 1999. Before then he had swam semi-competitively in High School. Before the open water swims he swam with the San Diego Swim Master, University of California, San Diego Masters Swimming program.
When Tom swam in the ocean events, 1 mile Ė 5 mile, he became interested in longer swims. He joined up with several Channel swimmers for ocean swims. The Channel swimmers convinced Tom that he should set his goal to swim the English Channel. Tom completed his nine-month training with a successful English Channel crossing in July of 2005. This began Tomís interest in swimming more long distance swims.
Tom completed his swim of Gibraltar Straits in September 2006. In 2006-2007 he swam the length of San Diego County (~85 miles) in 9 training swims of 8-11 miles each. He has set goals to swim a total of six different open water swims around the world.
Manhattan Marathon Swim.
Lake Tahoe (length).
Carol Hecker, Tomís wife, has been his crew on his English Channel and Gibraltar Straits swim. She fully encourages him to swim more.
Hopefully the Manhattan Marathon Swim will be his next accomplishment.
