| MORGAN FILLER, a 25-year-old self-described "invincible type," won the June 23 28.5-mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim with a time of eight hours, four minutes and 46 seconds, only three minutes short of the men's winning time. The biggest challenge, she said, was overcoming the putrid smell, which was inexplicably strong near Yankee Stadium CASSIE LOWE, a 38-year-old ultracyclist from Sydney, racked up her second consecutive win in the Race Across America, a nonstop 2,983-mile sprint from Portland to Gulf Breeze, Fla., on June 27. Although she slept just 90 minutes to three hours a day on her 10-day, seven-hour, 42-minute journey, her only gripe was that she "lost a layer of skin from my hands and the balls of my feet." |
