Elizabeth Fry Smashes Record for Clockwise Swim Around Manhattan

|New York, Sept. 18 -- Elizabeth Fry, 50, of Westport, CT, today smashed the record for swimming clockwise around Manhattan and became the first woman to swim around the borough in that direction when she completed the course in 11:41:05, breaking the old mark by 6:07:25. The old record was 17:48:30, set by Kris Rutford, a man, in 1995.|
Fry, who battles asthma, began last night near the Third Avenue Bridge in Manhattan, swimming down the East River and up the Hudson River before finishing where she began.
Fry, who finished fifth in the 2009 Manhattan Island Marathon Swim and has successfully crossed the English Channel three times since 2003, last year attempted a double crossing until asthma forced her to discontinue.
Morty Berger, founder of NYC Swim, which organized the record-setting event, said, "What made setting this record so difficult was that Fry was required to swim against currents of up to two knots for extended periods in the Harlem River and around the Battery in lower Manhattan. Nearly 40 percent of her swim was against these currents."
Fry has run 10 marathons including five in New York.
Fry's kayaker, responsible for keeping her on course and safe, was Richard Clifford of Larchmont, NY.
In addition to the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, NYC Swim's 11-race series, presented by RCN, includes the Brooklyn Bridge Swim, Liberty Island Swim, Governors Island Swim, NYC Pro Swim and a multi-sport event.
